Radical Production Improvements for Mung Beans

The installation this month of the latest computerised growing technology has quadrupled the amount of Mung bean sprouts grown by Sun Sprout and significantly improved their quality.

Sproutman Mung bean sprouts are now grown in two new purpose-built Mung bean rooms, both fitted with 24 growing bins and an arsenal of fully computerised monitoring and growing equipment. Each growing bin is capable of producing up to 1000 kg of sprouts per harvest. Computerised monitors ensure the quality of each harvest by continually keeping tabs on when each bin was planted when the sprouts are ready to be harvested. The new growing system also sees to it that each bin of sprouts is given the appropriate gases, nutrients, temperature and water needed for the length of their six-day growing cycle - and is capable of simultaneously looking after multiple bins in different growing stages.

Sun Sprout Managing Director, Stephen Dench says, “The new equipment has been specifically installed to help us meet the growing demand for Asian-style ingredients, especially from the food service trade. We see the Asian influence in our cooking continuing to rise and we want to make it easier for home cooks, chefs and caterers to obtain the fresh high quality Mung beans that feature so frequently in this type of cuisine.”

“The new growing system enables us to constantly have mung bean sprouts growing in a number of different growth stages and makes it possible to have a consistent daily harvest of fresh new sprouts,” Stephen adds. “The quality of the sprouts grown using this system is phenomenal and we are excited to be able to supply this standard of product on a consistent year-round basis.”

The building of the two new Mung bean growing rooms has also provided space for more product development. Sun Sprout’s original Mung bean growing room is now being used for the trialing of new sprout varieties and growing techniques.
