Sprout Success for Creative College Student

A talented Tauranga secondary school student tasted sprout success at the 14th National New Zealand Culinary Fare, held in Auckland October 8-10, by winning the Gold Medal in the Sproutman-sponsored Contemporary Café-Style Sandwich section.

Courtney Hughes, a Year 13 Otumoetai College student, wowed the judges at the Culinary Fare with her vibrant flavoured seafood kebab sandwich. The winning sandwich featured a creative combination of fresh prawns, scallops, proscuttio, cherry tomatoes, mesculin salad, sango sprouts and snow-pea shoots served on garlic sourdough bread.

The Culinary Fare Gold Medal was the second big win for Courtney in two months. Courtney was also the joint winner of the mid-North Island secondary schools Hospitality Standards Institute hospitality challenge in September.

Sproutman Auckland distributor Lynn Lum says, “Sun Sprout is dedicated to fostering the talent of young hospitality students nationwide and we congratulate Courtney for her win. The judges were very impressed with Courtney and the imagination she showed with the presentation of her sandwich.”
