Sun Sprout News, June 26th, 2006Nation-Wide Distribution for Dazzlingly Decorative Popcorn ShootsKiwi chefs can now push the boundaries of visual appeal and taste even further in their culinary creations thanks to the recent nation-wide availability of popcorn shoots.
Popcorn shoots are grown in New Zealand by Auckland-based Sun Sprout Ltd, and are now available in 75g punnets throughout New Zealand from Sun Sprout Ltd.
The stunningly vibrant bright yellow micro-greens are a favoured fine food garnish in Europe, and are rapidly becoming a regular feature of memorable menus throughout the USA and now in New Zealand.
Described by internationally renowned Kiwi chef Peter Gordon as having, `a really intriguing flavour palate’, popcorn shoots are extremely sweet and tender with a striking slightly sour after tang.
Peter is particularly fond of popcorn shoots and has used them in salads and as a garnish at his signature restaurant dine, at Auckland’s SKYCITY Grand Hotel. He says, “What we like to do is serve them raw. They’re such a beautiful thing that we try to make them quite prominent on the plate because the colour is like no other colour you have ever seen really. I think they’re great.”
Popcorn shoots are produced from special popcorn seed and blanched to keep them from turning green. The resulting bright yellow shoots are sensitive to light and need to be stored in closed black punnets to protect their vibrant colour.
