Always upgrading

Grading EquipmentThe cycle is never complete. If its not one department – it’s another, there is always ongoing development at New Zealand Fresh Cuts, our production facility for all our Sun Sprout products.

November 2008 saw the installation of new grading equipment onto our Farmer Bills Baby Peeled Carrot production line was completed as the next step in a planned upgrade of the plant. The smooth installation and commissioning was completed on schedule, in two phases.

Originating in the USA, the carrot grading equipment represents the latest technology enabling sorting of the carrot pieces into their various sizes, prior to peeling and polishing. The compact, high speed piece of equipment allows sorting into three size ranges, including the ultra small size for the snack packs of Farmer Bills Baby Peeled Carrots. This accurate grading ensures customer’s particular requirements are met.

Specifically to meet NZFC requirements, 2 grading modules were integrated into one single component involving chutes, in-feed conveyor, support frame and safety barriers.

The engineering team at NZFC, led by Mark Burmister, worked closely with a local engineering fabrication company to incorporate many design features into the overall design to give ease of maintenance, ease of access and improved safety. Clever design also resulted in the use of gravity out-feed, rather than the original proposed out-feed conveyor.
