NZFC reaches new heights in frost protection

In order to guarantee year round delivery of high quality products to our customers and consumers New Zealand Fresh Cuts Ltd have once again reached new heights.

May 21st, saw the installation of our new 10.5 metre high wind machine on the growing farm at Rangiriri in the Waikato.

Rangiriri is where we grow most of our baby salad greens and is a welcome addition for Chris Butler, our Farm Operations Manager and Louise Cooper, our on site Agronomist. With fan blades spanning a 5.4 metre diameter, the circulating air created ensures frost protection of a total area of 6 hectares or 900,000 lettuce plants.  The machine, driven by a 150hp diesel engine, has been installed on a 9-tonne concrete pad to ensure stability.

New Zealand Fresh Cuts searched to find the most environmentally friendly forms of frost protection they could and this wind machine came out on top.

New Zealand Fresh Cuts has recently obtained their draft Carbon Footprint as part of our CarboNZero ceritifcation from Landcare Research.  We are presently working through all aspects of our operations looking for opportunities to reduce carbon output. New Zealand Fresh Cuts has made a commitment to being carbon neutral as part if its long term sustainability strategy.
