Locking in Freshness

Since our establishment in 1989, Sun Sprout has gained a solid reputation as pioneers in the processing and production of premium quality fresh food products. We have achieved this through our strong commitment to freshness and innovation, our close relationship with our production partners, NZ Fresh Cuts Ltd, and the utilisation of the latest processing technologies, which enable us to deliver health and hygiene standards that are truly world-class.

All our activities and procedures are directed towards locking in nutrients and delivering optimum freshness and taste. In order to achieve this our research and development team is constantly focused on improving hygiene and quality control standards, and streamlining the process of picking and delivery.

To ensure consistent high quality, freshly harvested salad greens and carrots are cooled to 2°C in our new vacuum chiller immediately upon reaching our recently upgraded Auckland processing factory, and then quickly moved, via a 100% humidity chiller, to the processing rooms. All produce is then thoroughly washed, trimmed, sorted, packed, and ready for delivery as soon as possible after arrival.

This speedy streamlining of our processing enables Sun Sprout baby salad greens to be picked, washed, chilled, packed and delivered to supermarkets throughout New Zealand within a maximum timeframe of 48 hours to ensure maximum freshness and flavour.

The production of sprouts and wheatgrass is equally streamlined with precise computer control over all facets of their growing, from heat and lighting to nutrient systems. This enables us to optimise the growing conditions that produce thousands of kilograms of product every month of the year.

If that’s not enough, all our staff are thoroughly trained in food safety and best practice manufacturing methods, and our entire factory is temperature-controlled and monitored to enable year-round production. This together with the factory’s ‘high care’ area for packing and processingguarantees a consistently high and reliable standard of produce at all times.

To ensure the safest possible products we have an independently audited HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) food safety program and we are Vegfed approved growers. We also operate one of only a few temperature controlled MAF approved seed stores in New Zealand, which enables us to purchase and store large volumes of seed.
